Story

Maa Chandraghanta Mantra

या देवी सर्वभूतेषु मां चंद्रघंटा रूपेण संस्थिता।
नमस्तस्यै, नमस्तस्यै, नमस्तस्यै, नमो नमः।।

Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Ma Chandraghanta Rupena Samsthita
Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah

Dheeraj was a strong boy, well-built and muscular. However, his masculine and robust body scared other children because he would always boast of his strength. Soon Dheeraj started losing his friends.

Children younger than him and older than him would not come near him. No one wanted to talk to him because everyone was scared. If they said anything, Dheeraj might get offended and frighten them. So, he was left alone. This bothered him and he did not like it.

At home, his father asked Dheeraj, ”Why do you stay alone and aloof in school? Your teacher called me and told me that no one wants to sit with you. Nobody wants to pair up with you for any project or assignment. What is going on Dheeraj?”

Dheeraj said, “Father, everyone gets scared of me, they think I bully them and scare them. I don’t want to do that but why should I listen to them especially when I am so strong?”

His father said, “Dheeraj, you should always use your strength to protect other children and not to make them fearful. Use your power and courage to protect and guard those who are weaker than you, the way Maa Chandraghanta does.”

Dheeraj said, “Father, can you tell me more about Maa Chandraghanta? Who is she? How does she protect and guard the weaker people?”

Father said, “Sure! Let me tell you more about Devi Chandraghanta.”

Devi Chandraghanta is a form of Maa Durga worshipped on the third day of the Navratri. When Bhagwan Shiva was going in his marriage procession to marry Devi Parvati, he was dressed like a ghost. He thought that he was looking very nice but, he was looking really scary. Seeing him like this, Maa Parvati’s mother Devi Maina fainted and other people present at the wedding also got scared.

Devi Parvati, transformed herself into Maa Chandraghanta, wearing a bell-shaped half-moon on her forehead and with ten hands. She transformed herself to protect her family and friends present at the wedding.

Seeing Maa Parvati like this Bhagwan Shiva Ji also got a little scared. Then the Devi requested Bhagwan Shiva to make himself presentable as a bridegroom. Maa Chandraghanta and Bhagwan Shiva transformed themselves back to their normal form of bride and groom. All the people present for the wedding were happy now.”

Dheeraj was delighted to hear this story and he also wanted to help other children the way Devi Chandraghanta did. He chanted Mantra and worshipped Maa for the same. Soon, he could see the change in himself. Instead of showing his strength and power to other children, he was using it for their protection and guard.

Dheeraj learned the message from the Devi that one should use power for the protection of others and not to frighten them.
