The Story of Luv and Kush

Story

Raghav and Keshav were identical twins. They were well-mannered and always honest kids. People in their town admired them and would often say, "You are so much like Luv and Kush!"

One day, Keshav asked his father, "Papa, why does everyone keep saying that Raghav and I are like Luv and Kush? Who are they?"

Their father smiled and said, "Ah, Luv and Kush!  They are the sons of Bhagwan Ram.”

Raghav said, “Papa, please tell us their story."

Their father gave a warm smile and began the story.

A long time ago, in the kingdom of Ayodhya, there lived a great king, Shri Ram. He was kind, brave, and loved by his people. Bhagwan Ram had a wife named Sita, who was very wise and good-hearted. But one day, Devi Sita had to leave the palace and go to the forest because of some important reasons.

In the forest, Sita Mata stayed in the ashram of Sage Valmiki, a kind and learned sage. There, she gave birth to her twin sons, Luv and Kush. The boys grew up in the peaceful surroundings of the forest, learning about the scriptures, archery, and music from Sage Valmiki.

Luv and Kush were brave and intelligent kids. They loved their mother deeply and helped her in every way they could. They didn’t know that their father was the great king Shri Ram.

One day, Prabhu Shri Ram organized a grand horse sacrifice, known as the Ashwamedha Yagna, to bring prosperity to his kingdom. As part of the ritual, a royal horse was sent to wander freely, and anyone who stopped it had to face the king’s army in battle.

When the horse wandered near the forest where Luv and Kush lived, the twins saw it. Not knowing it belonged to their father, they stopped the horse and tied it to a tree without hurting it. When Bhagwan Ram’s army came to get the horse back, Luv and Kush bravely fought against them and defeated them, even though they were still young boys!

When Bhagwan Ram heard about the capture of his horse by the two boys, he called them to his palace. When Luv and Kush met Shri Ram, they narrated the entire story of Ramayana in the form of a song. Ramji was surprised that the boys knew of his story and his life incidents. But he was also impressed by their music and narration and also by their courage and strength. When he learned that they were his sons, he felt very happy. Sita Maa also came forward and revealed the truth.

After many years of separation, the family was finally reunited. Luv and Kush returned to Ayodhya with their parents, where they grew up to be wise and brave rulers, just like their father, Shri Ram.

Their father finished the story and looked at Keshav and Raghav and said, "You see, my boys, Luv and Kush were known for their bravery, honesty, and love for their family. That’s why people say you two remind them of Luv and Kush."

Both the boys smiled proudly, promising to always be as good and brave as the legendary Luv and Kush.
