The Story of Little Ray

The story teaches that we are all connected to the infinite and powerful truth, God.

The Story of Little Ray

Story

There was a small school surrounded by green fields on all sides. It was a regular day at school, but the children were delighted and excited. It was their favourite class: Vedic Education. Their teacher, Meera Ma'am, loved explaining big ideas with fun stories and activities.

Meera Ma’am wrote on the board: “Aham Brahmasmi – I am Brahman.”

The children stared at the words, puzzled. Arjun quickly raised his hand.“Ma’am, what does this mean? How can I be Brahman? I am Arjun.”

All the children started shouting, “Ma’am, I am Nitya.” “I am Tara.” “I am Vaibhav.”

Meera ma’am silenced the class and smiled. “That’s a great question, Arjun. Let’s understand it with a story.”

The Story of Little Ray

In the vast sky, there was a little ray of sunlight named Ray. Ray loved travelling to Earth, but one day, Ray began to wonder, “Who am I?”

Ray came down and fell upon a calm lake and looked at its reflection. “I’m just a little ray of light,” it thought. “I’m so small. The sun is so far away and so big. Wish I could be as big and powerful as the sun?”

As Ray sat there feeling small, a drop of water from the lake popped up and spoke, “Ray, do you know where you came from?”

Ray blinked. “I came from the sun!”

The drop of water smiled. “That’s right. And do you know something amazing? You’re not just from the sun; you are the sun.”

Ray was confused. “How can I be the sun? I’m just a tiny bit of light.”

The water drop explained, “Every ray of light is a part of the sun. Without rays like you, there would be no sunlight. You might look small, but you carry the same energy, warmth, and light as the sun itself. You’re never separate from it.”

Ray paused, then beamed brightly. “So, no matter where I go, I’ll always be the sun?”

“Yes,” said the drop. “You are the sun, shining everywhere, even if you don’t realise it.”

Ray danced happily across the lake, now knowing its true nature.

Meera Ma’am looked at the children. “So, what did Little Ray learn?”

“That it’s not separate from the sun,” said Riya thoughtfully.

“And what does that teach us about ourselves?” Meera ma’am asked.

Arjun raised his hand eagerly. “That we’re not separate from Brahman!”

Meera ma’am nodded and said, “Exactly.”

“But ma’am, what is Brahman?” asked Nitya

Meera ma’am smiled and said, “Children, Brahman is a state of pure awareness or wisdom called consciousness. It is a state of complete happiness. When we realise our true self, no matter what the situation is, our heart is always happy. Brahman is God, the ultimate truth, reality. Even though we might feel small, we’re part of something infinite and powerful.

“When we say ‘Aham Brahmasmi,’ we remind ourselves that we are not just separate individuals—we are part of the one great truth that is in everything.”

The children smiled, feeling warm and bright, just like Little Ray. They looked up at the sunlight again, realising they were as radiant as the sun itself.
