Ramana Maharishi (1879–1950) was a revered Indian sage, known for his great spiritual wisdom and simplicity. He was born Venkataraman Iyer in Tiruchuli, Tamil Nadu, but was mostly known as Shri Ramana Maharishi. His life transformed at 16 when he experienced a sudden awakening to his true Self, which he later described as eternal. He felt a deep peace and realized a big secret: inside everyone, there is a special light called the Self.

  1. Ramana Maharishi was named Venkataraman Iyer when he was a child. He was born in Tiruchuli, Tamil Nadu.


  2. His father was Sundaram Iyer and his mother was Azhagammal.


  3. At the age of 16, he left his home and went to live near a beautiful mountain called Arunachala, to the west of Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu.


  4. People began calling him Ramana (which means pleasing) Maharishi because he was very kind and wise.


  5. Ramana Maharshi lived in Sri Ramanasramam, the ashram situated in the foothills of Arunachala.

  6. Sri Ramanasramam included a library, hospital, post office and many other facilities for the common people.


  7. Ramana didn’t talk much but taught people something simple and powerful - Self-inquiry (Atma Vichara).


  8. He asked them to find out, "Who am I?" This question was not about their name or job but about discovering the true light inside them.


  9. He lived a simple life and spent his time meditating and thinking about life.


  10. Ramana Maharishi taught that by looking within, we can discover love, joy, and our true selves.
