Karma Yoga for Kids

Karma Yoga for kids

Karma Yoga, also known as the 'Yoga of Action', is the noble path of selflessly performing good deeds and helping others. The word "Karma" means action, and "Yoga" means a path or practice. So, Karma Yoga is about learning how to perform actions with a sense of duty, love, and selflessness. It is one of the most respected practices in the Bhagavad Gita, which emphasises the importance of serving others without expecting anything in return.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Bhagwan Krishna teaches Prince Arjun the importance of Karma Yoga and Nishkama Karma (to perform one’s duty without worrying about the results).

कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।

मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते संगोऽस्त्वकर्मणि।।

This shloka explains the importance of performing our duties and not worrying about the fruits of our actions. Also, the results should not be our motive for performing that action.

Small actions create big differences and by performing one’s duties in the right way, we feel fulfilled and happy. Imagine the satisfaction that comes from guiding a blind person safely across a busy street. At that moment, we feel happy and proud and our spirits lift.

Qualities such as kindness, patience, and responsibility not only shape our character but also develop new friendships and spread happiness around us while becoming better individuals.

myNachiketa teaches Karma Yoga to kids by helping them understand the value of selfless actions, responsibility, and kindness, which inspires them to make a positive impact in their daily lives.

  1. Karma Yoga teaches us to do our best without expecting any reward.

Do your best in everything you do, but don’t worry too much about what you’ll get in return. When we help our friend with a subject or to learn a new game, we should not expect any gift from him. Similarly, when we help our parents in the household work, we should not demand anything in return and do it as our duty.

Helping Others without any reward
  1. Karma Yoga teaches us to do our duties (dharma) selflessly and sincerely.

All work is important when done to make the world better and should be done with respect and effort. Whether it’s finishing homework or studying for exams, we should face every task with readiness. Even if a task doesn’t interest us, we should still give it our full dedication if it is important.

  1. Karma Yoga teaches us to be kind and respectful to everyone.

It’s important to show kindness and respect to everyone—our friends, family, teachers, and even plants and animals. Always be polite and treat everyone equally, no matter their caste, colour, or social status. Be grateful to God for giving us the chance to share love and care with all living beings.

  1. Karma Yoga teaches us to perform at least one good deed every day.

Our small good actions can have a big and positive impact on people around us. Whether it's picking up litter in the neighbourhood, watering plants in the garden, or taking care of an injured dog, these little yet powerful acts of kindness can bring happiness and positivity to everyone.

Perform good deeds
  1. Karma Yoga teaches us to be grateful for what we have.

By saying 'thank you' and 'I'm sorry', we not only become better individuals but also build stronger relationships with those around us. We should always be thankful for whatever we have and show gratitude to those who help us, like our teachers or parents. It's important to never say or do anything that might hurt others.

  1. Karma Yoga teaches us to always be honest and truthful.

Honesty and truth are key to building trust and respect. Children, whenever you play a game or take part in a competition, never cheat, and always be fair and honest. When you commit a mistake, don't hide from your parents and always speak the truth. This habit will help you in forming strong and lasting relationships with others.

  1. Karma Yoga teaches us to control our desires.

Real happiness doesn't come from fulfilling desires but from performing the right action(karma) and being satisfied. We should not keep asking for things we don’t really need, like extra toys or clothes, because it takes our focus away from what’s important. When we focus on doing our best without always wanting more, we feel happier and more peaceful.

  1. Karma Yoga teaches us to gain the right knowledge to do the right action

We should learn from our teachers and read books to gain knowledge. As it is only knowledge can help us differentiate between good and bad action. With the right understanding, we act wisely, we make the world a better place to live.
