Teachings of Guru Ravidas Ji

Guru Ravidas, also known as Ravidas Ji, was a 15th–16th-century saint, poet, and spiritual leader who taught about equality, humility, and devotion to God (Bhakti). Guru Ravidas was born in 1377 CE in a village near Varanasi, India. His teachings helped people understand themselves and God.

myNachiketa presents the teachings of Guru Ravidas Ji. Children let us learn from these teachings and apply them to our lives for a kind, equal, and peaceful world where everyone is treated with respect and love.

1. Equality of All People

Guru Ravidas taught that everyone is equal, regardless of caste, religion, or background. He believed no one is superior or inferior and everyone deserves the same respect and dignity.

So children, treat your friends, classmates, and neighbours with kindness, no matter how they look or where they come from. Respect everyone the same way you want to be respected.

2.   God Resides in Everyone

Guru Ravidas believed that God lives in the hearts of all living beings. He said that God is not limited to temples, rituals, or specific communities but is present in every living being. Guru Ravidas encouraged us to find God in ourselves and others, this is the way to attain real wisdom. It helps people to become caring and compassionate towards every being.

So children, think of everyone as special because they have God inside them. If you hurt someone, it’s like hurting God. Be kind and gentle with everyone.

3. Purity and respect to Kirat (manual work)

Guru Ravidas gave importance to physical labour and honest work. He taught that all forms of work when done with honesty and dedication, are pure and worthy of respect. Guru Ravidas said that working sincerely and honestly is a way of showing respect to God.

Dear Children do your homework and schoolwork sincerely. Don’t copy answers or cheat because honesty is more important than winning or getting rewards. Always remember, God loves those who are honest and hardworking.

4. Importance to self-realization and inner harmony (Sahaj)

Guru Ravidas often spoke about Sahaj, a state of effortless balance and peace, where the individual soul (Atma) merges with the universal soul (Paramatma). It is not something we can achieve externally but from within. It is achieved through devotion, meditation, and self-realization.

Guru Ravidas taught that while the world appears different, it is all a display of the power of God. Once we realize this unity, we become humble and live in harmony with other beings.

So children, Sahaj teaches that peace comes from within. Instead of reacting angrily or getting upset when things don’t go as planned, you can learn to stay calm by practising meditation.

5. Devotion to the formless God (Nirguna)

Guru Ravidas described God as Nirguna, meaning without forms. He said that God is beyond human understanding and exists everywhere. He followed Nirguna Bhakti which focuses on experiencing God through devotion, love, and personal connection by praying to the God within.

Teachings of Guru Ravidas Ji 6

Dear children, when you see God as formless and present in everything, including nature, people, and yourself; you start appreciating them. You can be kind to everyone. You can avoid teasing or bullying anyone, as everyone is equally valuable.

6. Live a Simple and Humble Life

Guru Ravidas taught that happiness comes from living a simple life and not being greedy. Guru Ravidas taught the importance of being content and not getting too attached to material things. He believed that simple living allows one to focus on what truly matters—gaining knowledge, doing good deeds, and serving others.

Dear children, be happy with the toys, clothes, or books you have. Don’t compare yourself to others or always want more things. Instead, share your things with those who need them more than you do.

7. Begumpura- “The City Without Sorrow”

"Begum" means "without sorrow," and "Pura" means "place or city". Guru Ravidas dreamed of a world where everyone lived happily and treated each other with respect. Begumpura symbolizes a life of peace and contentment focusing on universal brotherhood and justice.
