Do you often come across these questions:
Who created the universe?
Why do we exist?
Who is God?
What is our relationship with God?
Why should we pray to God?
Does God reward or punish us for our Good or bad deeds?
Hinduism offers a marvellous collection of books, holding the knowledge of God and truth -- Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, the Epics (Ramayana and Mahabharata), Purana etc.
These books don’t just give answers—they inspire us to live meaningful and joyful lives. Written by wise sages, they are full of stories, songs, and lessons that teach us how to connect with God, respect nature, and make the world a better place.
The ancient Vedic rishis were great thinkers and philosophers who discovered the truth about God and nature through their keen observation and logical thinking. With their sincere efforts and deep reflection, they shared this wisdom in a way that people can understand and benefit from even today. Here we are focusing on the books based on the teaching of Vedanta.
Vedanta books are a collection of timeless wisdom that guides us on:
understanding the true nature of God and ourselves,
how to live a meaningful and purposeful life,
to form a connection with God,
how to stay peaceful and joyful.
These books are like magical keys that unlock the secrets of happiness, courage, kindness, and devotion. They help us understand who we are, how we are connected to nature, and how we can live in harmony with everyone around us.
Vedas The Vedas are a collection of Hindu religious books from ancient India. They are written in a special language called Vedic Sanskrit and are the oldest sacred texts in Hinduism. The word "Veda" means "knowledge" because these books are full of wisdom. These books provide a path of self-discovery by first imparting knowledge about the outer world (nature) and then gradually revealing the truth of the inner world (self).
There are many Vedas are divided into four parts, and each has its unique teachings:
Rigveda: The oldest Veda, filled with songs praising different gods, like Agni (fire) and Indra (rain).
Yajurveda: A book with instructions and prose mantras for performing rituals.
Samaveda: A book of songs and chants, mostly taken from the Rigveda, sung during special ceremonies.
Atharvaveda: Contains songs, spells, and magical formulas for everyday life and healing.
Upanishads The Upanishads are ancient Indian texts that explore deep spiritual and philosophical ideas. They are part of the Vedas and focus on understanding the nature of God, the self, and the universe. The Upanishads teach that the true essence of each person is the same as God, encouraging a journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth.
Some of the important Upanishads are: 1. Katha Upanishad 2. Mundaka Upanishad 3. Chandogya Upanishad
4. Brihadaranyaka Upanishad
5. Isha Upanishad
3. Bhagavad Gita
Bhagavad Gita is the book that records the teachings of Shri Krishna imparted to Arjuna (one of the Pandavas) during the Mahabharata war. Shri Krishna taught Arjuna about the importance of duty, selfless action, wisdom and devotion for living a meaningful and truthful life. This book comprises 18 chapters and around 700 Verses. Each verse holds deep meaning and lesson.
